State Department

The United States Department of State is the authority responsible for granting millions of temporary visas and immigrant visas each year to individuals born outside of the United States who wish to travel into to visit, study, or even live in the country.

The Bureau of Consular Affairs works from the Department of State’s management office to administer laws, draw up regulations, and carry out policies regarding consular services and immigration. Additionally, it provides a monthly Visa Bulletin.

The Department of State watches over the United States embassies and consulates through the Bureau’s Office of Visa Services around the globe and guides consular officers abroad in issuing all temporary and immigrant visas. In addition, the Bureau of Consular Affairs carries out the provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) related to it’s relation to the Department of Homeland Security, specifically USCIS and ICE.
